Goodman’s cost-saving sustainability solution secures Bunzl-King Belgium lease renewal

Thursday, 12 February 2015

Two years prior to the end of Bunzl-King Belgium’s lease term, Goodman, a leading global owner, developer and manager of industrial real estate, has secured a five year lease extension with the customer. Goodman negotiated the lease extension by offering a range of cost-saving sustainability solutions.
Bunzl-King Belgium, an expert in the supply of disposable goods such as food packaging and tableware, has for the past seven years leased an 11,300 sqm facility from Goodman’s flagship managed fund, the Goodman European Logistics Fund (GELF). The distribution centre is strategically located in the region of Willebroek, in the centre of the “Golden Triangle” of logistics between Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. Bunzl-King Belgium originally selected Goodman for the property’s strategic location in order to consolidate its logistics operations.

Intelligent cost-saving measures
Goodman will soon start works to implement several sustainability solutions designed to reduce Bunzl-King Belgium’s operational costs. Working together with lighting experts VEKO, Goodman will install LED lighting throughout the facility. Additionally, motion sensors, which restrict lighting to active areas, and energy efficient infrared heaters will be installed. These technologies are predicted to reduce electricity and heating costs by 70% and 50% respectively. The works are scheduled to be complete by the second quarter of 2015.

“Goodman’s willingness to upgrade the building with beneficial sustainability measures underscores its focus on seeking the best solutions for its customers,” said Werner Meuleman, Managing Director, Bunzl-King Belgium. “Such investments also affirm Goodman’s commitment to quality property management, which is a critical added-value.”

Sustainability core to business
Sustainability is a key business driver for Goodman that provides cost savings for its customers and value for its investors. For example, after the completion of ongoing construction projects, Goodman will have more than 700,000 sqm of logistics space equipped with LED lighting in Continental Europe. The industrial real estate group has also been active in brownfield conversions, having already converted more than 280,000 sqm of old industrial space into modern logistics properties.

“The sustainability upgrade for Bunzl-King Belgium demonstrates the strength of our integrated business model and the benefit to our customers and investors. The upgrade provides a mutual benefit by reducing operational costs for our customer and maintaining the value of the property for our investors,” explained Kim Cornille, Goodman Country Director for Belgium.
